I read I can use pumice and linseed oil as a ground, but I’m reluctant to use oil as it will deaden the sound. Can I use shellac (instead of oil) and pumice rubbed in as a ground and sealer? I think it will be better?

Amber shellac gives a nice golden tone in the ground. I have used it before with oil varnish on top.
Yes you can. Shellac is a good starter for understanding varnish.
